Week 8

  1. There are only modes of transport by way of roads in the area. This includes buses as the main form of public transport and taxi as the only other option. The most common form is obviously by car.
    1. With the introduction of the CSELR line, some changes to the current forms of transport could be that there are less buses travelling along the same line as the light rail and more leaving from light rail stations for ease and efficiency of the public.
    2. The concept of interchange between forms of transport, with the inclusion of the CSELR, could be as simple as driving to the light rail station. parking your car in the car park or nearby, and joining a light rail from there. This could also be matched by catching a bus to the light rail station and changing there, and vise versa.
  2. From the TfNSW’s Guidelines for the Development of Public Transport Interchange Facilities, Table 4-1, p 27, these amenities and facilities are necessary. The Light rail would fall under the multi-access interchange category or the major/specialized category at peak.

Principles of Universal Design

  1. Simple and intuitive use
Use of the design is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills or current concentration level.

  2. Size and space for approach and use
Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s body size, posture, or mobility.

  3. Low physical effort
The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with a minimum of fatigue.

  4. Perceptible information
The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.

  5. Tolerance for error
The design minimizes hazards and the adverse consequences of accidental or unintended actions.

  6. Equitable use
The design is useful and marketable to people with diverse abilities.

  7. Flexibility in use
The design accommodates a wide range of individual preferences and abilities.

The most important aspect of the design is efficiency, simplicity and effectiveness.

How my design satisfies these principles
  1. Simple and intuitive use
Plenty of signage and easy to understand information

  2. Size and space for approach and use
The whole area is designed to be open, no small gaps between pillars. wheelchair and pram access from all directions.

  3. Low physical effort
The station is flat and steps straight out onto the park area. There are openings in all directions for easy access.

  4. Perceptible information
The station will have signs, monitors with information and speakers for announcements.

  5. Tolerance for error
There will be as little structural columns and features that could get in peoples way and cause hazards. The focus is on large open areas.

  6. Equitable use
With no stairs necessary the design will be marketable to many people with diverse abilities.

  7. Flexibility in use
There will be plenty of seating as well as standing area on the platform. There will also be a cafe and a news stand near to accommodate for individual preferences.
